Leura is where the more expensive real estate in mountains is located -- high fences, locked gates, tantalising driveways and a solid wall of vegetation hiding the sweeping views that I know are just over that rise. Big gardens with hired help and signs on the gate saying "bore water in use" or "tank water" to stop us getting upset at them using water during drought.
Some of the gardens show during the Leura Garden Festival in spring if you want a chance to glimpse behind the walls.
It is interesting that home-owners feel obliged to apologise for their water-usage in this way. Why are we annoyed that they use 'our' water in times of shortage? So long as they pay for it ...
ReplyDeleteAnd using bore water is no way out. It just comes straight from the aquifers which is 'our' water, too, or the water that belongs to the land, the environment. Even the tank water, if it had not been captured by the roof, would have gone into the environment.
Those signs absolve noone of nuttin' ...
It is not so much "us" getting upset by the water usage the signs are to avoid the water police who were monitoring the water restrictions put in place to make sure we didn't run out of water. I don't know if you were aware but there were actually vehicles driving around checking -- and big gardens were no doubt a target.
DeleteOveruse of bore water can be a problem but it depends somewhat on the geology. Tanks can actually be a benefit to the environment as they stop the excess runnoff which can cause erosion.
"high fences, locked gates" - I've decided I think these are stupid.
ReplyDeleteWhy do wealthy people do this?
Do they think they will catch our germs?
More than likely they are a target for theives.
Deletehahaha!!! you know, that never even occurred to me!!
DeleteIt's that Irish chip on my shoulder!
I thought Irish chips went out with the potato blight.
