Ant's Nest

Blackfellows Hands Track, Newnes State Forest

We are on our way to the Lost City. Passing a few ant's nests on the way.

Words to walk with:
The Ant by Ogden Nash
"The ant has made herself illustrious
By constant industry industrious.
So what? Would you be calm and placid
If you were full of formic acid?"

  1. Very blob-from-out-of-spaceish! They 'eject' this matter don't they? It is not just soil that they rearrange. Is it? Oh gawd, now I need to know about the innards of an ant.

  2. I assume that this is an active colony of ants that live inside in great numbers. Now I am imagining a troop of small boys who decide that they need to poke that thing with sticks to see what is inside.

I recall a similar encounter I had with a nest of yellow jackets that were building a big paper nest in the ceiling of our front porch. It did not end well.

  3. Looks like the modern sculpture! Really huge one. I also love the trees. Great place.

  4. I don't know anything about the behaviour and ants and I certainly wasn't going to poke it with a stick to find out more so I can't help with any of the questions.

I don't even know if this is an ant's nest or termite's nest.

  5. I was amazed at these 'castles' the first time I saw them. They are great architecture pieces.
