Glow worm tunnel

Entrance to Glow Worm Tunnel, Gardens of Stone National Park

The second tunnel is a walking tunnel. Take a torch, the tunnel floor is wet and very rough and not far in it's pitch black.

Sorry, no photos of the glow worms. I don't know how to take photos of pin pricks of light in deep dark black.

Words to walk with:
A Clear Midnight by Walt Whitman
This is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless,
Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done,
Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the themes thou
lovest best.
Night, sleep, death and the stars.

  1. Not sure I agree with Whitman there.

However, this is a terrific shot of the tunnel! You would need a tripod to take the glowworms. Make all your camera settings before entering the tunnel, setup by torch light. Wait a while for the glowers to turn themselves on again, and shoot. I am always astounded how much light there is in pitch dark.

This Saturday coming I go with a bunch of other old codgers to walk through a disused train tunnel down at Helensburgh.

  2. Thanks for Whitman:)
The photo is fantastic - the place looks a bit scary, but I love it

  3. Time lapse on a tripod, like photographing the moon or the stars? I have yet to do that.

I love all these verdant places you're visiting, so green and soothing.

Walt was a wacky guy. I think he had reason to contemplate the big ideas in life. It certainly makes me think about midnight in a different light.

I left an answer for you but I'll just say that while my computer was acting up it made blogging a chore - but I still think you're really amazing. '~)

  4. Great photo! I can see some beautiful big ferns outside the tunnel.
