Duck's weather

Wentworth Falls Lake, late morning yesterday

Before we start on our next walk which was on a pleasantly warm sunny day I thought I should make mention of the current weather. It's raining, raining, raining. We've had grey days on and off ever since Christmas but for the past three days it's been pelting down. Up the mountain is completely enveloped in cloud.

February-March are our wettest months but every five or six years it really turns on the tap like now.

Words to walk with:
From Song for The Rainy Season by Elizabeth Bishop
"Hidden, oh hidden
in the high fog
the house we live in,
beneath the magnetic rock,
rain-, rainbow-ridden,
where blood-black
bromelias, lichens,
owls, and the lint
of the waterfalls cling,
familiar, unbidden.

In a dim age
of water
the brook sings loud
from a rib cage
of giant fern; vapor
climbs up the thick growth
effortlessly, turns back,
holding them both,
house and rock,
in a private cloud."

  1. The kids (the pregnant ones!) and I made a quick dash up the Mountains yesterday to pick up some e-bay things. It is v. wet up your way!! We got back here just before all hell was loosed ...

I wonder if the cormorants bother to read the sign on the post. Being good, Aussies they probably ignore it like humans do!

  2. Love the misty backgrounds. Hard to imagine it's the middle of an Australian summer.

What are the predominantly white ducks?

When you're finished with those rain clouds, please blow them our way.

  3. Lovely poem excerpt, sounding like warm rain and mist. I especially like your photo of the misty dock, with cormorants.

  4. Vicki, I don't know duck varieties. I think they are some sort of domestic duck. It's a shame that there are still parts of the country very dry while some of us are getting downright soggy.

  5. I'm fairly sure the white ones are Muscovies, closer to geese than ducks in many respects (hard to tell at this size, but their heads do appear a little larger).

I really didn't expect cormorants in the mountains Joan!

  6. Great shots of the wet weather. We always say we need the rain but after having a week of holidays in Tasmania under sunny skies, I have been frustrated by a week of rain in Sydney where I couldn't enjoy the outdoors. I expect the sun will return when I'm back at work next week.

  7. I'm jealous. It rarely fogs up in Sydney.

  8. Jim, I got so hot during my holidays that I am reminding myself about that. It's helping me enjoy the rain more. At least it's not too cold -- 17C today.

Winam, I agree summer mist is nice, just so long as their are more sunny days than misty days.

  9. The ducks are on the right places to make this photo looks like a painting! Magical atmosphere too. Awesome shot indeed!

  11. This is a lovely poem and photos.

About the ducks - Resident ducks in ponds frequented by people are often a mixture of little Easter ducklings who have grown to be ducks. They are released in ponds to fend for themselves. The interbreeding of white Peking and brown Mallards or whatever produces the mottled patch-work ducks like in your photos. The ducks don't care,

  12. You've described the rainy season in such an interesting way with this poem and pictures. I wish we had rocks and ferns to add interest here, mostly, we have humidity.

  13. The first shot is a great mist scene.
