Bring your own wood

Camping area, Megalong Valley

Be a good citizen and don't go scavenging for sticks to light your campfire, the forest needs them to stay healthy.

Words to walk with:
Sleeping in the Forest by Mary Oliver
"I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better."

  3. Forest like this has a lovely smell to it. And yes, the debris is vital to forest floor health.

I like that single burnt sapling in the foreground pointing the way through the woods.

  5. I used to camp a lot when my kids were little. When the weather was nice we would lay out under the stars and watch the moon move across the night sky. Your poem by Mary Oliver reminds me of a poem by William Stafford that I used recently. http://tulsagentleman.blogspot.com/2010/01/skywatch-friday_28.html

  6. I'm listening to the soundtrack to Jackie and Hilary as I read MO and contemplate your photograph. Another triumph for you, JE.

  8. “Bring your own wood.” Excellent advice.

I love this photo. There’s something about the bush – even in a photo – that is instantly calming. An energy that is absent in our concrete jungles.
