A Farm-Picture

Farm, Megalong Valley

Words to walk with:
A Farm-Picture by Walt Whitman
THROUGH the ample open door of the peaceful country barn,
A sun-lit pasture field, with cattle and horses feeding;
And haze, and vista, and the far horizon, fading away.

  1. I like his use of "ample" here. Lovely word producing lovely image.

What sort of gums are they? I am trying to identify a gum for my Monochrome post this week. It is smooth and the bark strips off it. But I cannot find enough photos of gums to identify it. Looks a bit like these.

  2. Back when I started this blog I made it a mission to be able to name all the different types of trees but have failed miserably even with a book in hand plus another book telling me what I am likely to find in the Blue Mountains. You have to study the bark and the leaves in detail and they all begin to look the same in the end!!

  3. The old barn is the center of interest but the big trees and ample space around it give this a refreshing openness. Whitman is perfect for this.

  4. i grew up working a ranch with my family, feeding the
cows, helping with round up, etc. your photo and
poem took me right back to the ample harvest of
wheat and AMPLE amount of work. :)

  5. Chocolate box picturesque! I can imagine climbing over the fence and exploring the old shed and bushline. Of course, no farm scene would be complete without the ever present cockatoos.

  6. Lea, I've got wheat showing up at Sweet Wayfaring the day after tomorrow I think.

Vicki, very observant ... yes those little white bits are cockatoos. We also have black cockatoos in reasonable numbers around here too... up close they are massive (well not emu or eagle sized massive but still big).

  9. Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos? After the bushfires, a flock flew in here, vandalised the trees and left again. Magnificent birds.

  10. AB, perhaps not, could be just a shed.

Vicky, yes Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos they mostly sit high in the pine trees around the town but I do encounter them in lower trees on bush walks.

  11. Such a quintessentially aussie scene .... eucalypts and an old shed with a rusty corrugated iron roof! Just love this scene.
